Lacombe

Town in south-central Alberta, Canada, 122 km/76 mi south of Edmonton and 23 km/14 mi north of Red Deer; population (1996 est) 8,000. Situated in an agricultural region, it processes dairy products and has grain elevators and flour, grist, and lumber mills. It is also a summer resort, with a number of lakes and provincial parks nearby.

Settlement began in the early 1880s, and increased with the arrival of the railway in the 1890s. A government experimental farm has been here since 1908. Features include Michenor House (1895), residence of Canadian governor general Roland Michenor 1967-74, and the Blacksmith Museum (1904). Of the historical buildings on Main Street, 25 have been restored.
