Laconia

Region of ancient Greece in the southeast of the Peloponnesus. It was bounded on the north from west to east by Messenia, Arcadia, and Argolis, and terminated in the south in the two promontories of Taenarum (Cape Matapan) and Malea. In the eastern part of the district was Sparta (otherwise known as ‘Lacedaemon’) on the River Eurotas.

Laconia

City and administrative headquarters of Belknap County, central New Hampshire, 35 km/22 mi north of Concord; population (2000) 16,400. It lies on a peninsula between Lakes Winnisquam and Winnipesaukee, and to the southeast across Paugus and Opechee bays. It is the manufacturing and trade centre of an agricultural and resort region. Products include boots, skis, textiles, textile machinery, metal products, and leather goods.

Laconia was settled in the 1770s and was a railway carriage construction centre in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
