Lacordaire, Jean Baptiste Henri Dominique (1801-1861)

French cleric who became known for his eloquent sermons and funeral orations. His most famous sermons, which he called ‘conferences’, were those delivered at Notre Dame in Paris in 1843-51 and in Toulouse in 1854.

Lacordaire joined the Dominican Order in 1838. In addition to collections of his sermons, his writings include Mémoire pour le rétablissement en France de l'ordre des frères precheurs/Note on Reviving the Order of Preaching Brothers in France, 1839, and Vie de St Dominique/The Life of St Dominic, 1841.
