Lae

Seaport and former capital of the Australian mandated territory of New Guinea (now Papua New Guinea), on Huon Gulf, 320 km/200 mi north of Port Moresby; population (2001 est) 112,400. Lae remained the seat of administration until it was evacuated after the Japanese attacks in January 1942. It was recaptured by Australian forces in 1943.
