Lafayette County

County in north-central Mississippi, in the northeast delta, bounded by the Tallahatchie River; area 1,733 sq km/669 sq mi; population (1990) 31,800. The capital is Oxford, whose university and industries strongly influence the economy. Otherwise it is largely agricultural, producing cotton, corn, dairy goods, and poultry. Pine and hardwood timber are cut.

A section of the Holly Springs National Forest occupies the northeastern corner of the county. Lafayette is generally recognized as the model for US novelist William Faulkner's Yoknapatawpha County, the setting for several of his works.
