Lagomorpha

Mammalian order that includes hares, rabbits, and pikas. It consists of two families: Leporidae including 11 species of hares and rabbits, and Ochotonidae with 14 species of pikas.

Like rodents, lagomorphs have long incisors (front teeth) that grow continually, so must be kept short by gnawing. However, they also have a second pair of non-gnawing, chisel-like teeth which, along with other characteristics, differentiates them from rodents.

According to 1995 research by French and Israeli zoologists comparing protein sequences from rabbits, rodents, and other mammals, despite morphological similarities, the lagomorphs are more closely related to primates than rodents.
