Lahaina

Community on the west coast of Maui Island, Hawaii; population (1990) 9,100. The economy depends on tourism and sugarcane and pineapple cultivation.

Formerly the residence of Hawaiian royalty, Lahaina was the first white settlement in the area and a whaling port in the 19th century, serving briefly as the capital of the islands. More recently, it has been an anchorage for the US Pacific Fleet. The Lahainaluna (missionary) School (1831) is here.
