Lahr, Bert (1895-1967)

US actor. A comedian with a loveably ugly face, he mugged and gagged his way through impossible situations that he created for his characters. After touring in vaudeville with his wife (1916-27), he appeared on Broadway in Hold Everything (1928). A musical comedy star (1928-64), he also appeared in films (1931-67), including The Wizard of Oz (1939) in which he played the Cowardly Lion. In 1956 he played Estragon in Waiting for Godot. Lahr was born in New York City.
