Laine, Cleo (1927- )

English jazz musician and actor. Known for her multi-octave range, she began by singing in the big band of John Dankworth, and has remained in musical partnership with Dankworth, later her husband, for most of her career. Her wonderfully distinct delivery has opened up opportunities in music theatre and in straight acting.

Dankworth, who was a founder-member of the legendary Club 11 (1948), later acted as her musical director and assumed a less prominent public role, concentrating on composition and arrangement. Since 1970 they have run an annual workshop/festival for young musicians near their home at Wavendon, Buckinghamshire.

Laine's birthplace was Southall, Middlesex.
