Baker Lake

Small town in the Keewatin region, located in the Canadian territory of Nunavut, at the mouth of the Thelon River and the northwest end of Baker Lake; population (1996 est) 1,400. Inuit handicrafts are important to the local economy and Baker Lake is the terminus for canoe trips on several nearby rivers. Government and scientific stations are also employers.

The Thelon Game Sanctuary (1927) is situated to the west of Baker Lake. The town has an airport and is home to part of the Nunavut Arctic College (1984). Features include an Inuit Heritage Centre (1994) and various galleries.
