Balaton, Lake

Lake in western Hungary, south of the Bakony Mountains. It is the largest freshwater lake in central Europe, 77 km/48 mi long and covering 635 sq km/245 sq mi. Its waters drain into the River Danube. Vineyards cover the hilly northern shores, but the southern shore is generally flat. Fruit and wine are produced in the surrounding region, and there are numerous lakeside holiday resorts.

The lake is popular for sailing; motorboats are banned.
