Lake Forest

City in northeastern Illinois, on Lake Michigan, 48 km/30 mi north of Chicago; population (1990) 17,800. It is one of the most affluent of Chicago's residential suburbs, and has no industrial development.

Although first settled in 1835, it was laid out in 1856 as one of the earliest examples of the classic 19th-century railway suburb. The city is the seat of Lake Forest College (1857) and Barat College (1858). Fort Sheridan is to the south.
