Lake Wales

City in central Florida, 16 km/10 mi southeast of Winter Haven; population (1990) 9,700. A popular winter holiday centre set amid small lakes, it has a noted museum and cultural centre. It is the site of Iron Mountain (99 m/325 ft), the highest point on the Florida peninsula.

The mountain is home to Bok Tower Gardens, including the Singing Tower, a marble tower (1929) with a 57-bell carillon. Lake Wales is also a market, processing, and distribution centre for local citrus fruit.
