Lake Worth

City in southeastern Florida, on Lake Worth (a lagoon that opens into the Atlantic), 10 km/6 mi south of West Palm Beach; population (1990) 28,600. It is a busy winter holiday centre with a 300-m/1,000-ft municipal pier. There is some light manufacturing and processing of local farm produce.

Settled in the 1870s, it began rapid development early in the 20th century when waterfront lots were given away to purchasers of nearby farmland. Palm Beach Community College (1933) is here.
