Lake of the Woods

Lake in southwest Ontario, Canada, on the border between Canada and the USA, extending into the province of Manitoba, Canada, and the state of Minnesota, USA; it lies between Lake Winnipeg and Lake Superior; area 4,860 sq km/1,876 sq mi. Its waters are 25 m/82 ft deep. The chief river flowing into the lake is the Rainy River, from the east.

The lake contains numerous islands, and tourist homes have been built on many of them. Kenora, a town on the northern shore of the lake at the source of the Winnipeg River, is the centre of lumbering and mining enterprises for the surrounding districts, and light aircraft for tourists.
