Lakehurst

Town in east-central New Jersey, 35 km/22 mi southwest of Asbury Park; population (1990) 3,100. The US Naval Air Station established here in 1919 was the American terminal for transatlantic dirigible flights from 1924 until the Hindenburg fire of 6 May 1937.

It maintained facilities for lighter-than-air craft until 1962 and has been a Naval Air Engineering Center since 1974.
