Lakeland

City in Polk County, west-central Florida, USA, 46 km/29 mi east of Tampa and 82 km/51 mi southwest of Orlando, in the lake region and citrus belt; population (2000) 78,500. Although it serves as a centre for the area's citrus products and as a centre for phosphate mining, its economy depends mainly on its reputation as a winter resort.

Lakeland was settled in the 1860s, incorporated as a town in 1883 and as a city in 1885. It is the home of Florida Southern College (1885); many of the later buildings on this campus were designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. The Southeastern College of the Assemblies of God (1935) is also located in the city.
