Lakmé

Opera by Léo Delibes (libretto by E Gondinet and P Gille), first produced at the Opéra-Comique, Paris, France, on 14 April 1883. It tells how the Brahmin priest Nilakantha opposes an affair between his daughter Lakmé and the English officer Gerald. After being stabbed, Gerald is nursed by Lakmé, who poisons herself when she realizes that Gerald must return to his duties.

When soprano opera star Patricia Racette and her partner of eight years, mezzo-soprano Beth Clayton, take Lincoln Center's Rose Hall stage on June 23 to perform a duet for the Charles Busch-hosted gay pride event True Colors, they'll be singing the most lesbian-identified piece of opera ever: the "Flower Duet" from Delibes's Lakme.
This is the famous opening duet from Delibes's Lakme, an opera centered around the clash between a father's love for his daughter and the love his daughter has for an officer from the invading British army.
The selections include Ravel's ``Mother Goose Suite'' and ``Piano Concerto in G Major,'' Delibes' ``Duet From Lakme,'' Bizet's ``L'Arlesienne Suite No.
