Lallans

Variant of ‘lowlands’ and a name for Lowland Scots, whether conceived as a language in its own right or as a northern dialect of English. Because of its rustic associations, Lallans has been known since the 18th century as ‘the Doric’, in contrast with the ‘Attic’ usage of Edinburgh (‘the Athens of the North’). See Scots language.
