Lally-Tollendal, Thomas Arthur, Comte de Lally-Tollendal

    0.01 sec.

Lally-Tollendal, Thomas Arthur, Comte de Lally-Tollendal (1702–1766)

French general who fought in the 1745 Jacobite rebellion in Scotland against English rule, and commanded the French expedition to India during the Seven Years' War (1756–63). In this latter campaign, after initial successes, he was forced to surrender the French base of Pondicherry in 1761. Summoned home, he was tried, imprisoned, and executed in 1766.

Lally-Tollendal was born at Romans, Dauphine. He inherited his aristocratic title from his mother, his father being an Irish Jacobite who had emigrated to France after the failure of the 1715 rebellion, Sir Gerard O'Lally. He entered the French army in 1721, served in the war against Austria (1734), and took part in the battles of Dettingen (1743) and Fontenoy (1745). He accompanied Prince Charles Edward Stuart to Scotland in 1745 and fought at the battle of Falkirk.
