Lally-Tollendal, Trophime Gerard, Marquis de Lally-Tollendal (1751–1830)

French politician and author, son of Thomas, Comte de Lally-Tollendal. He fled France during the revolution, but returned to serve the restored Bourbon monarchy.

Lally-Tollendal was born in Paris. After his father's execution, he tried but failed fully to establish his innocence. In 1789 he was appointed a deputy to the States General, representing the nobility of Paris, but in 1791 fled to Switzerland and later to England. He returned to Paris during the Consulate and was created a peer by Louis XVIII. In 1816 he became a member of the Academy. He published Plaidoyer pour Louis XVI/Plea on Behalf of Louis XVI, 1793, and Défense des emigrés français/In Defence of French Emigrés, 1794.
