Lamar

City and administrative headquarters of Prowers County, southeastern Colorado, on the Arkansas River, 80 km/50 mi east of La Junta; population (2000) 8,900. A processing centre for a livestock and grain area, it produces flour, feed, and dairy goods.

Lamar

City and administrative headquarters of Barton County, southwestern Missouri, 51 km/32 mi northeast of Joplin; population (2000) 4,400. President Harry S Truman was born here (1884). His birthplace is a State Historical Site.

Founded in 1856, Lamar was the eastern terminus of the Fort Scott Military Road (to Kansas). The well-known Missouri newspaper the Lamar Democrat was established here before the Civil War.
