Lambert, John (1619–1684)

English general. He was a cavalry commander in the English Civil War under Oliver Cromwell (at the battles of Marston Moor, Preston, Dunbar, and Worcester). He supported Cromwell's assumption of the protectorate in 1653, but opposed proposals in 1657 to award him the royal title. In 1658, as leader of the army, he forced the Protector Richard Cromwell to recall the Rump, the remainder of the Long Parliament dissolved in 1653. At the Restoration he was condemned to death, but reprieved and imprisoned for life.
