Lammers, Gerda (1915–1993)

German soprano. After studing in Berlin, she sang in concerts until 1955, specializing in Lieder. Her stage debut, at Bayreuth, was followed by a period at Kassel (1955–70), where she made her debut as Marie; her other roles there included Senta, Alceste, Isolde and Brünnhilde. She appeared at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London in 1957, as Elektra, and in 1959, as Kundry. She repeated the role of Elektra for her debut at the Metropolitan Opera House, New York, in 1962. Other roles included Medea and Purcell's Dido and she recorded Hindemith's song cycle Das Marienleben.
