Lamoni

City and administrative headquarters of Decatur County, south-central Iowa, 58 km/36 mi southeast of Creston and 5 km/3 mi north of the Missouri border; population (1990) 2,300.

Founded by Mormon leader Joseph Smith III, it was named after a king in church literature. Graceland College (1895) is here, as is Liberty Hall Historic Center, at Smith's home. The Mormon heritage is confirmed by the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (RLDS), which sponsors Graceland College.
