Lamu Island

Island off the east coast of Kenya, 200 km/124 mi northeast of Mombasa; population (1991 est) 12,000. The chief centre, Lamu, is Kenya's oldest town, and was formerly the focal point of a coastal city-state, trading in ivory, cowries, spices, tortoiseshell, oil seed, and grain. The island's economy declined following the abolition of slavery in 1907, but in recent years tourism has developed alongside traditional crafts such as the building of dhows (Arab sailing ships with one or two masts).
