Lanao del Sur

Province of northern Mindanao Island in the Philippines; area 3,873 sq km/1,495 sq mi; population (1995) 572,000. The capital is Marawi. The province is comprised mainly of a volcanic plateau, which includes Lake Lanao (131 sq km/51 sq mi in area, the second largest in the country) and its outlet, the Agusan River. The main economic activities include fishing, and the growing of rice, corn, coconuts, and root crops.

Marawi is the largest Muslim (Moro) city in the Philippines. Mindanao State University and the Aga Khan museum of Muslim culture are located here.
