Lancaster County

County in southeastern Pennsylvania, bordered to the west by the Susquehanna River and to the south by Maryland; area 2,466 sq km/952 sq mi; population (1990) 422,800. Its capital is Lancaster. The county is one of the state's richest farming and livestock raising areas, producing a variety of crops, including tobacco and wheat.

It is also the heart of Pennsylvania Dutch country, with its traditional Amish and Mennonite communities, which attract large numbers of tourists.
