subsidence

Downward movement of a block of rock. Subsidence is usually due to the removal of material from below the surface, and can be caused by faults, erosion, or by human activities such as mining.

With surface water dwindling, groundwater has been excessively tapped, causing land subsidence, cracks on buildings and roads, and ruptures in water pipes.
And to further exacerbate the problem, the greater New York area is still experiencing land subsidence triggered by the glacial retreat that occurred more than 10,000 years ago.
