Landini, Francesco (c. 1325–1397)

Italian organist, lutenist, composer, and poet. He was one of the chief exponents of the Italian ars nova. Although blind from early childhood, he became a skilled player of various instruments, in particular the portative organ, and was organist at the Church of San Lorenzo, Florence, 1369–96.

He was born in Florence and spent most of his life there, but also visited Venice, where he was highly acclaimed. As a composer he is remarkable for his madrigals and caccie, both forms that later underwent considerable development.

Works
