Landon, Alf

Landon, Alf(red Mossman) (1887–1987)

US politician. A popular liberal Republican, he ran for president against the incumbent Franklin D Roosevelt in 1936 but was overwhelmingly defeated. He later accepted a presidential appointment as US delegate to the 1938 Pan-American Conference.

Landon, born in West Middlesex, Pennsylvania, was raised in Kansas and received a law degree from the University of Kansas in 1908. After a successful career in business, he entered politics and was elected governor of Kansas in 1932. After World War II, Landon became a voice for the elimination of trade barriers and for international development.
