Landon, H(oward) C(handler) Robbins (1926– )

US musicologist. He has devoted himself particularly to the study of late 18th-century music and has published a number of articles and books, including The Symphonies of Joseph Haydn (1955), The Collected Correspondence and London Notebooks of Joseph Haydn, and Haydn: Chronicle and Works, five volumes (1976–80).

He studied at Swarthmore College and Boston University. Since 1947 he has lived in Europe. He has also published Haydn: His Life and Music (1988), and editions of numerous works by Haydn, including several operas and the complete symphonies. He has published books on Beethoven (1970) and Mozart as a Mason (1983), and also in 1983 edited recently discovered material for Handel's Roman Vespers. Other works include Mozart's Last Year (1988), Mozart: The Golden Years (1989), Mozart and Vienna (1991), and Vivaldi, Voice of the Baroque (1993).
