Landskrona

Town and port in the province of Skåne, southern Sweden, on the Öresund, 32 km/20 mi north of Malmö; population (2000 est) 37,700. Industries include machinery, chemicals, shipyards, and sugar refining.

Landskrona was founded by Erik av Pommern and received its charter in 1413. The citadel, one of Scandinavia's best-preserved fortresses, was built by Christian III, king of Denmark and Norway, in the early 1540s. The town remained under Danish rule until 1658. In 1747 the medieval town was razed to the ground to make room for further fortifications, and a new town was built in the French classical style on land reclaimed from the sea.
