Lane, Joseph

Lane, Joseph (1801–1881)

US governor and legislator. A farmer and merchant in Indiana, he emerged a hero from the Mexican War and was appointed first territorial governor of Oregon (1848–50). A Democrat representing Oregon, he was a member of the House of Representatives (1851–59) and the US Senate (1859–61). In 1860 he ran for vice-president on the Democratic ticket that favoured secession, thus ending his public career. Lane was born in Buncombe County, North Carolina.
