Lanesboro

Town in Berkshire County, northwestern Massachusetts, adjoining Pittsfield; population (1998 est) 3,000. Marble and iron were its principal industries, but Lanesborough is now a residential area for commuters to Pittsfield. Situated in the Berkshire Hills, it attracts people to Pontoosuc Lake for recreation.

Established in 1742, it was originally called New Framingham, then Richfield. Troubled by disputes with local American Indians, a fort was built in 1756. The town was incorporated in 1765.

The US humorist Henry Wheeler Shaw (‘Josh Billings’) was born here in 1818.
