Lang Son

Capital of Lang Son province, northern Vietnam, situated on a small plain on the left bank of the Ky Cung River; population (1990) 52,200. Lang Son is an important trading town close to the Chinese frontier. There are zinc deposits nearby.

The inhabitants of Lang Son are Tho, Nung, Man, and Vietnamese.

Lang Son has been the scene of a number of battles, including one between the French and Chinese in 1885, and one between the French and Japanese in 1940. The town was partly destroyed in 1979 by invading Chinese forces.

One wished they could have shed additional light on the relationship between the Japanese and various Vietnamese nationalist parties, the role played by officers of the Imperial Army, after Japan's surrender, in the running of the Yen Bai Military Academy that trained officers for nationalist forces fighting the Viet Minh, and the connection between Japan's advance into North Vietnam and the seizure of Lang Son by Tran Trung Lap and the pro-Japanese Viet Nam Phuc Quoc Quan in 1940.
