Abbots Langley

Town in Hertfordshire, England, 8 km/5 mi north of Watford; population (2001) 10,500. It is said to be the birthplace of Nicholas Breakspear, who later was Pope Adrian IV (1154-59), the only Englishman ever to become Pope in Rome. The parish church in Abbots Langley dates from 1154.

According to local legend, the town got its name in 1045 when a Saxon, Ethelwise the Black, and his wife Wynfelda, gave Langelei (long lea or long meadow) to the monks and monastery of St Albans, and the monastery then played an important role in the governing of Abbots Langley for hundreds of years.
