Langhorne, John

Langhorne, John (1735–1779)

English poet, translator, and clergyman. He wrote for the Monthly Review and published several volumes of popular poetry including Genius and Valour 1764. His most important work is the translation of Plutarch's Lives 1771–72, written with his brother, William Langhorne (1721–1772).

He was born in Kirkby Stephen, Westmorland, and educated at Cambridge. After filling several curacies he became rector of Blagdon, Somerset, 1766.
