Langridge, Philip (1939- )

English tenor. He studied at the Royal Academy of Music, London and began his career as a violinist. He has an unusually wide repertory and has been heard in operas by Handel, Rameau, and Monteverdi, as well as in performances of contemporary music. He recorded Schoenberg's Moses und Aron with Solti, and in 1986 co-created the title role of Birtwistle's opera The Mask of Orpheus at the London Coliseum. He made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera House, New York in 1985, as Ferrando, and appeared in Salzburg in 1987, as Schoenberg's Aron, returning there in 1990, as Idomeneo, and in 1993, as Monteverdi's Nero. He sang Pelegrin in the UK first performance of Tippett's New Year, at Glyndebourne in 1990. He was awarded the CBE in 1994.
