Lanier, Jaron (1960– )

US computing innovator who coined the term virtual reality (VR), and set up a small company, VPL Research Inc, to produce the first VR headsets and data gloves. The headsets enabled wearers to experience graphical worlds created by high-powered computers and to ‘meet’ in virtual spaces. In 1996 he was chief scientist at New Leaf Systems Inc, and visiting scholar at Columbia University's Department of Computer Science and New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. Lanier is also a musician, a composer, and a painter.
