Lanuvium

Ancient city of Latium, 30 km/19 mi southeast of Rome. Its inhabitants were granted Roman citizenship 338 BC, but its chief magistrate and council continued to be called dictator and senatus respectively, even in imperial times.

Lanuvium stood on a hill and had a temple of the goddess Juno Sospita (‘the deliverer’). It was the birthplace of Publius Clodius's great enemy Milo and of the emperor Antoninus Pius.

In the beginning attacks were made by Filerico against those who believed that "lavinia" (Aeneid 1, 2), not "lavina" was the correct lectio; then he had to defend himself from the accusation of having confused the three old Latian towns of Lavinium, Lanuvium and Lanivium, of denying the authenticity of vv.
Capturing a similar development further down the social scale are the rules of a burial club from Lanuvium, a small town in Italy, dating from about 136 CE.
