Lanzarote

Most easterly of the Spanish Canary Islands; area 795 sq km/307 sq mi; population (1995 est) 76,400; capital and largest town Arrecife. The desertlike volcanic landscape is dominated by the Montañas de Fuego (‘Mountains of Fire’) with more than 300 volcanic cones. With irrigation, vegetables, grain, and vines can be grown, and fish-canning and tourism are leading industries.
