Latakia

Port with tobacco industries in northwest Syria, 120 km/75 mi from Tripoli (Lebanon); population (2003 est) 362,300. It exports tobacco, sponges, silk, and cotton. The tobacco, which takes its name from the city, is used in pipe mixtures. Latakia occupies the site of Laodicea and excavations have revealed remains of the earlier city. It was an important and wealthy city during the Crusades.
