Lapchick, Joe (1900-1970)

US basketball coach. One of the game's greatest coaches, he coached for two decades at St John's University 1937-65. He also coached for nine seasons with the National Basketball Association's New York Knicks (1948-56). He was elected to basketball's Hall of Fame in 1966. Lapchick was born in Yonkers, New York. He played in the American Basketball League during basketball's formative years (1927-31) before turning to coaching.
