Lapchick, Joe

Lapchick, Joe (1900–1970)

US basketball coach. One of the game's greatest coaches, he coached for two decades at St John's University 1937–65. He also coached for nine seasons with the National Basketball Association's New York Knicks (1948–56). He was elected to basketball's Hall of Fame in 1966. Lapchick was born in Yonkers, New York. He played in the American Basketball League during basketball's formative years (1927–31) before turning to coaching.
