Lappi

Northernmost province of Finland, encompassing Finnish Lapland; area (excluding water) 93,860 sq km/36,329 sq mi; population (1998) 196,700. It lies within the Arctic Circle, and snow covers the ground October–May. Forestry, farming, and hydroelectricity are important in the economy, and it is fast developing into a tourist area. The administrative centre is Rovaniemi. The town of Kemi at the top of the Gulf of Bothnia has lumber and pulp mills, and is a timber-shipping centre.
