Lara

Mountainous state in northern Venezuela, bounded to the south by Portuguesa and to the north by Falcon; area 19,869 sq km/7,671 sq mi; population (1996) 1,430,968. the capital is Barquisimeto. The state is traversed from southwest to northeast by the Andes. A railway runs from Barquisimeto to Tucacas on the coast, a small port mainly exporting bananas and fruit. Coffee and other tropical crops are grown in the state.
