Lardner, Dionysius

    0.02 sec.

Lardner, Dionysius (1793–1859)

Irish scientific writer, professor of natural philosophy and astronomy in the University of London 1827–59. For 20 years (1829–49), he was engaged in compiling his major work, The Cabinet Cyclopaedia, which spanned 133 volumes.

Lardner was born in Dublin, entered Trinity College there, and took holy orders. However, he abandoned this vocation as he grew increasingly interested in science, contributing to the Edinburgh Review and various encyclopaedias.
