Larned

City and administrative headquarters of Pawnee County, south-central Kansas, on the Arkansas River where Pawnee Creek joins it; population (1990) 4,500. It is an agricultural trade centre.

Fort Larned was established here (1859) on the Santa Fe Trail, figured in American Indian wars, and was deactivated in 1878; its stone buildings are now a National Historic Site. The Santa Fe Railroad later came through the city.
