Also found in: Encyclopedia 0.07 sec.

Larra, Mariano José de (1809–1837)

Spanish journalist and playwright, born in Madrid. He is chiefly remembered for his political and critical articles, remarkable for their perceptive and acid insights into contemporary problems. His pessimism about Spanish society, and an unhappy love affair, led to his suicide, an event which made him the idol of Romantic writers of the day.
