Las Cases, Emmanuel Augustin Dieudonne Marin Joseph

    0.04 sec.

Las Cases, Emmanuel Augustin Dieudonne Marin Joseph (1766-1842)

French soldier and historian. A royalist, he lived abroad for some years following the revolution, but returned under Napoleon to work on an Atlas historique, 1802. He followed Napoleon into exile and published the ex-Emperor's memoirs, Memorial of St Helena, in 1823, thus establishing the Napoleonic legend.

In 1792, Las Cases served in the Royalist army of Condé during the Revolutionary Wars, and then spent some time in England. His famous atlas was published under the pseudonym ‘Lesage’; this work so impressed Napoleon that he made Las Cases a count in 1810.
